As popularized on the Kop, "Now You're Gonna Believe Us" has been bellowing out of the streets of Liverpool for the past month or so. A tune that has not been belted out across the terraces for quite some time. Thirty years to be exact since Liverpool won the top flight of English football. 30 fucking years. There it is, the first f-bomb on fanfilter, and I honestly couldn't give a shite.
My Liverpool story is unique, similar to pretty much every fan here in the U-S-of-A. I grew up in a traditional New-England household, loving the Red Sox, Patriots, and Lakers (what the hell happened for me to get the last one?). Coming with my love for the Red Sox came Fenway Sports Group and John Henry. I always really, really like Henry and the work he did in Boston. I mean, the man was part of breaking the ol' Curse of the Bambino.
However in 2010, Henry did something that would affect me directly. Scratch that, he would change my life. 2010 was the year FSG purchased Liverpool FC from Gillett and Hicks, two American owners being chased out of Merseyside with fire and pitchforks.
It would never be an easy job, trying to bring Liverpool back to glory. Years of poor management and direction had the club in shambles, but FSG promised a way back for their ever so loyal fans. This same year was when my love of soccer started to blossom. The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the christening of my love for soccer. Torres, Drogba, Sneijder. Real stars of the game I got to watch that summer.
My love of the game would slowly but surely evolve over the next few years, until Liverpool's programming finally came across my television, on the Red Sox channel NESN. Stevie G's passing and leadership drew me in like no other athlete has before. The flair of Luis Suarez and prospect of Raheem Sterling had my eyes glued to the television on weekend mornings (both would go on for "bigger and better" things).
That first year I was a faithful Liverpool fan, was the year Stevie slipped. I think most people remember everything about that moment. Gerrard's reaction, the announcer commentary, maybe even Chris Pajak's YouTube rant that went viral on the internet. It was gut-wrenching, because that was the year we were going to finally do it. Of course I was a newcomer, so none of this meant anything to me, but soon enough it would.
Despite being in America, the next few years went by in a whirlwind being a Liverpool fan. I began watching every game, buying every kit, retweeting every Bobby Firmino highlight reel; anything and everything, I did it. The emergence of new manager Jurgen Klopp transformed the club. "From doubters to believers" is his famous quote from his entry interview at Liverpool, and holy shit is it relevant now (even though my blood pressure still goes through the roof in extra time).
Two Champions League's finals with one massive victory, and another close Premier League race with Man City later, brings us to the present. Liverpool are the champions of the world, still chasing the trophy that has eluded them for 30 years. 30 massive years, Liverpool fans who have supported the club for their whole lives, have waited for.
Now, 22 points above second place Manchester City, Liverpool just need 12 points from their remaining 11 matches to win their first ever title under the Premier League name. You know Klopp's tactics are working because fans are no longer worried about jinxing our chances. We believe we are going to win the title, probably shortly. We know we are going to break records along the way, and we know this is one of the best Premier League sides to ever step on the grass at Anfield.
I was lucky enough to visit Anfield this year and see one of those victories against Tottenham Hotspur, during the year Liverpool won the league. Yeah, I'm saying it too. Liverpool is gonna win the league. And we are gonna be goddamn unbearable the rest of the way (insert Jurgen Klopp fist bump).
