“Breaking news, Red Sox ace Chris Sale is out indefinitely with a flexor strain in his left elbow” Fucking great, but come on Red Sox nation you kinda knew this was coming. Chris Sale was shut down last August for left elbow inflammation and never got Tommy John surgery which he needed and now has to get. In 2018, Sale was unstoppable posting an ERA of 2.11, however, he was placed on the DL for left shoulder inflammation. This didn't have a major effect on him for the rest of the 2018 season. Although, this did play a major role in 2019, when he had his worst season yet, he went 6-11 while posting a 4.40 ERA. At the beginning of the 2019 season Sale’s fastball was in the lower 90’s compared to his regular 96 MPH fastball. This was partially due to not getting enough starts in spring training but it also was due to his shoulder issues. The Red Sox are very knowledgeable of Sale’s injuries in the past years, yet they still give him a 5-year extension worth 145 million in the 2019 season which was his worst season yet. Yes, this guy did win the Sox a world series title but that was two years ago while he was in his prime. A pitcher’s prime is from the ages of 24 to 29. Chris sale is 30 now and will be earning around 30 million for five more years. As you all have heard in the news, Mookie Betts has been traded to the Dodgers this offseason. The Sox traded Mookie knowing he wanted a max contract next offseason and they simply didn't have the money to give him. Mainly in part to extending Chris Sale to a 5-year deal worth 145 million. When you think of the Boston Red Sox you think of Fenway Park, the Green Monsta, Big Papi, and MOOKIEEEE. Maybe it’s just me but Chris Sale isn't the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the Red Sox. So just maybe it would have been smart to keep a franchise type of player on your roster.
Mookie is only 27 years old and has been in the show for only six seasons. He has won four straight gold glove awards, three silver slugger awards and yes an MVP award. Also to mention, he has yet to sustain any major injuries. This is the guy that you just traded to the Dodgers, while the Sox extended Chris Sale who has yet to win any major awards in his 10-year career in the show. This is just another huge miss on the Red Sox’s part. Likewise with the signings of Rusney Castillo, Pablo Sandoval, and Carl Crawford. The Red Sox threw a combined 309 million at these bonafided bums.
